Ollas have been used for thousands of years. The concept is simple: unglazed terracotta allows water to seep through its walls slowly and steadily, delivering it right to the root zone. Your plant takes what it needs, so there is no risk of overwatering or underwatering. It is one of the most low-effort, effective ways to keep houseplants thriving.
This striped version adds a real design element to your plant display. The red and pink pattern is hand-painted, so each olla has its own slight variations that make it one of a kind. It is crafted by potters Ana and Vitor in their workshop in Portugal's Leiria region, where ceramic skills have been handed down through generations.
How to Use
- Make a small space in the soil near your plant and press the olla in, pointy end down. Leave the rounded top (with the cork) visible above the soil line.
- Remove the cork and fill the olla with water.
- Pop the cork back in to reduce evaporation.
- Refill when empty. Most plants will need a top-up about once a week, depending on the season, plant type, and room conditions.
Heading off on holiday? Water the surface soil and fill the olla before you leave. It will keep working as the surface water is absorbed.
Materials
- Body: microporous terracotta ceramic with hand-painted red and pink striped glaze (upper portion)
- Stopper: natural cork
What These Do
- Microporous terracotta ceramic: The unglazed lower section allows water to pass through its tiny pores gradually, delivering moisture straight to the roots. This mimics natural ground moisture and suits your plant's own watering rhythm.
- Hand-painted striped glaze: The coloured upper portion is glazed, which means water is directed out through the buried, unglazed section only, right where your plant needs it.
- Natural cork: Keeps evaporation down and stops soil or debris getting into the water.
