A simple terracotta olla that takes the stress out of plant watering. Fill it up, pop it in the soil, and let the natural porosity of the ceramic deliver water slowly and steadily to your plant's roots. It is an ancient method, and it works brilliantly.
- Self-watering olla in classic natural terracotta
- Made from microporous ceramic with a natural cork stopper
- Handcrafted in Portugal by artisans in the Leiria region
- Typically only needs refilling once a week
- Suitable for all green houseplants, indoors and out
- No electricity, no plastic, no waste
This is the original Pepin olla, and it is their bestseller for good reason. The warm, natural terracotta colour fits into any setting without fuss, and the unglazed ceramic does exactly what it has done for centuries: it lets water seep slowly through its walls, keeping the soil around your plant's roots consistently moist.
There is no overwatering to worry about, because the plant draws moisture only when it needs it. And there is no underwatering either, because the olla keeps a steady supply available at root level. It is a genuinely hands-off way to keep your houseplants healthy.
Each olla is handmade by potters Ana and Vitor in Portugal's Leiria region, where ceramic craft has been a tradition for generations. Because they are made by hand, no two are exactly alike in texture or surface finish.
How to Use
- Make a small space in the soil near your plant and press the olla in, pointy end down. Leave the rounded top (with the cork) visible above the soil line.
- Remove the cork and fill the olla with water.
- Pop the cork back in to reduce evaporation.
- Refill when empty. Most plants will need a top-up about once a week, depending on the season, plant type, and room conditions.
Going away? Water the surface soil and fill the olla before you leave. It will keep your plant going while you are off.
Materials
- Body: microporous terracotta ceramic (fully unglazed)
- Stopper: natural cork
What These Do
- Microporous terracotta ceramic: The unglazed clay is full of tiny pores that allow water to pass through gradually. This delivers moisture directly to the root zone, mimicking natural ground moisture and working with your plant's own rhythm.
- Natural cork: Sits in the top of the olla to reduce evaporation and keep soil and debris out. Easy to remove for refilling.
