A bright pop of mustard yellow that does more than look good in your plant pot. This handcrafted ceramic olla waters your plants gradually and naturally, using an ancient technique that lets the roots draw moisture exactly when they need it.
- Self-watering terracotta olla with a striking mustard yellow glaze on top
- Made from microporous ceramic with a natural cork stopper
- Handcrafted in Portugal by artisans in the Leiria region
- Typically only needs refilling once a week
- Suitable for all green houseplants, indoors and out
- No electricity, no plastic, no waste
The olla works on a beautifully simple principle. Unglazed terracotta is naturally porous, so when you fill the olla with water, it seeps out slowly through the ceramic walls, directly into the surrounding soil. Your plant takes what it needs, when it needs it. No more soggy roots, no more forgotten watering.
The mustard yellow finish on the upper half gives this olla a cheerful, contemporary look that sits well alongside mid-century or Scandi-style interiors. And because each one is handmade by potters Ana and Vitor in their Portuguese workshop, every piece has its own unique character.
How to Use
- Make a small space in the soil near your plant and press the olla in, pointy end down. Leave the rounded top (with the cork) visible above the soil line.
- Remove the cork and fill the olla with water.
- Pop the cork back in to reduce evaporation.
- Refill when empty. Most plants will need a top-up about once a week, though this varies with the season, plant type, and room temperature.
If you are heading away on holiday, water the surface soil as normal and fill the olla. It will take over as the surface water is absorbed, buying your plants extra time.
Materials
- Body: microporous terracotta ceramic with mustard yellow glaze (upper portion)
- Stopper: natural cork
What These Do
- Microporous terracotta ceramic: The unglazed lower section has tiny pores that allow water to pass through slowly, delivering moisture directly to the root zone. This ancient watering method respects your plant's natural rhythm.
- Mustard yellow glaze: The coloured upper portion is glazed, which means water only seeps from the buried, unglazed section, directing hydration where it is needed most.
- Natural cork: Reduces evaporation and keeps soil and debris out of the water reservoir.
