Soap flakes are the old-fashioned way of doing the washing, and they still work. These are made in France from organic vegetable oils, and 99.9% of what's in the bag is of natural origin.
They're made first and foremost for hand washing the things you don't want going near a harsh detergent: wool, silk and lingerie. A handful in hot water, a gentle soak and a good rinse is all it takes.
For everyday laundry, dissolve them in hot water and you have a plain liquid laundry soap with a short, simple ingredients list. There's no added perfume, which makes them a good choice if you find scented detergents too much. They can also be used as a base for making your own soap.
The flakes come in a kraft paper bag, so there's no plastic tub to deal with when it's empty.
How to use
Hand wash: dissolve the flakes in very hot water, about one handful per 5 litres. Leave your washing to soak, without too much scrubbing, then rinse in clean water.
Liquid for the machine: dissolve 45g of flakes in 1 litre of hot water and use around 150ml of the mixture per wash. Stick to the dose, run full loads and pick a low temperature cycle where you can.
Store in a cool, dry place. The flakes keep a little moisture, which helps them dissolve, so keep the bag closed. Lasts for 2 years if stored well.
Safety
Keep out of reach of children. In case of contact with eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.
